Flag Rock
A must-visit spot on every Galle itinerary is Flag Rock, located at the southernmost tip of Galle Fort in Sri Lanka. Originally constructed as a Portuguese fortress in the 1580s, it served as a strategic watchtower to monitor approaching ships. In the seventeenth century, the Dutch reinforced Galle and used flags atop this rock to signal sailors about potential dangers offshore. Today, a quaint staircase leads visitors up to the rock, offering breathtaking panoramic views. From here, you can also admire the ramparts of Galle Fort and the iconic Galle Lighthouse. Flag Rock is especially popular as a prime vantage point to witness stunning sunsets. The path leading to the rock is dotted with local vendors offering traditional Sri Lankan snacks, refreshing drinks, and fresh tropical fruits.
