Turtle Hatchery Center, Mahamodara
Families and lovers of animals can visit the Turtle Hatchery Center in Mahamodara, Sri Lanka, to observe the beauties of nature and contribute to conservation efforts. The center, which is close to Galle, saves, heals, and releases five different species of sea turtles: olive ridley, leatherback, loggerhead, green, and Hawksbill. Threats to these turtles include poaching of their eggs, contamination from plastics, and lack of habitat. Visitors can watch injured adult turtles being treated in special pools at the center, which offers a safe sanctuary for them. The center also provides a touching opportunity to watch the hatching process, in which young fish are housed in secure enclosures until they are reunited with their parents in the dark of night. The facility also provides educational opportunities by highlighting the difficulties faced by sea turtles during their life cycle and the significance of their protection. It cultivates a sense of accountability for protecting these threatened species.
